Age- a factor to consider when considering LASIK eye surgery

LASIK eye surgery is a procedure which can improve a person’s vision considerably. LASIK is known to be one of the safest and most effective methods of treating many vision problems. Conditions such as myopia and astigmatism can be treated effectively.

LASIK eye surgery is a highly sophisticated procedure, and the patient should meet certain criteria. Age is one of the factors which need to be considered before undergoing LASIK.

Many people experience a change in their vision as they get older- the vision quality of an adolescent and someone in their mid 30’s can be considerably different.

It is advisable that patients do not undergo LASIK eye surgery prior to the age of 18, as it may not provide effective results and the patient may be required to undergo another procedure when their vision stabilises.

Patients suffering from myopia should avoid LASIK until at least the age of 21. However, there is no upper age limit as such for the procedure, and cases are reviewed on an individual basis.

Patients should consult a LASIK eye surgery expert before undergoing any treatment, in order to have their eligibility assessed and their questions answered.
