Conditions which need to be met to qualify for LASIK eye surgery
Posted in LASIK Surgery on August 3, 2010
LASIK eye surgery is advised for those who suffer from myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Although they can be temporarily overcome by wearing glasses or contact lenses, these may prove ineffective in some cases. This is where LASIK surgery can help.
Many people all over the world have benefited from LASIK surgery, although it is necessary to see an expert for a thorough consultation.
Criteria for qualification
To qualify for a LASIK, one has to fulfill certain criteria. The basic requirements for the surgery are
1. The patient should be of minimum 18 years of age. The age limit is required as the cornea has to be fully mature. 2. Pregnant women are advised against the surgery. 3. Patients vision should have been stable for a period of at least 1 year prior to the surgery. 4. Patients should not be suffering from any immune disorders or other eye complications.
The process
LASIK is an abbreviation for Laser assisted Situ Keratomileusis. The process basically involves making a cut on the flap of the cornea. The laser makes the cornea reflect light in the right direction- thus helping to repair faulty vision. The procedure is usually quite painless, although an anaesthetic is commonly used.
After the surgery, patients are advised to rest for a short period to prevent any trauma to the eye.
