Does Lasik affect your lifestyle?

Posted in LASIK Surgery on May 7, 2009

Lasik surgery can help you gain freedom from eye glasses and contacts, allowing you to participate in several activities which would have been impossible or difficult before the surgery. However, some activities can elevate the risks associated with post-Lasik surgery, particularly during the healing process.

Tanning booths and sunlight It is important to always wear sunglasses that have UV protection to protect your eyes, with or without Lasik eye surgery. However, after Lasik surgery, it is vital that you wear protective glasses to protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays for at least a couple of weeks, or as prescribed by the eye surgeon. Exposure to UV includes exposure to tanning beds and normal sunlight and can lead to retinal damage or cataracts.

Swimming and other water sports One of the many benefits of Lasik surgery, for many people around the world, is the ability to swim and enjoy other water activities, such as scuba diving and water skiing. This does not mean that you can rush and jump into the swimming pool or beach immediately after the surgery. After Lasik surgery, your eyes will be very sensitive and vulnerable to infections, so it is important to avoid swimming and other water sports for at least some weeks after the surgery.

Lasik surgery is an easy and painless process and the results can be seen almost immediately. However, it is important to follow the precautionary steps prescribed by the eye surgeon during the healing period to enjoy a life free of eye glasses and contacts in the future.
