Eye Surgery and follow-up treatment

Posted in Eye Care on September 19, 2008

The eye is one of the most vital organs, so an eye surgeon should identify the correct procedure for dealing with a particular vision problem. The safest option to correct and improve vision is the new blade-free Laser eye surgery. This highly evolved eye surgery only uses lasers to cure patients, rather than using blades.

It is important that critical care is taken during and after an eye operation. While operating on the patient, surgeons prefer to use local anaesthesia rather than general anaesthesia. The techniques used to immobilise the ocular muscles for eliminating pain during operation are called retrobulbar and peribulbar techniques. For a quick procedure, topical anaesthesia using lidocaine gel is used. With topical anaesthesia, the patient is needed to cooperate with the surgeon, to control the pain to some extent.

General anaesthesia is generally used in the case of children, and also for adult patients who insist on it. A proper sterile condition is created for the surgery by using providone-iodine as an anti-septic. Sterile drapes, gowns and gloves are used for surgery.

After undergoing LASIK vision correction, there is no need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
