Get perfect vision through laser eye surgery
Posted in Laser Eye Surgery on February 15, 2009
Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is a refractive surgery for correcting the vision of the eye. The main area where the surgery is carried out is the cornea in order to avoid the use of glasses or contact lenses. Glasses or contact lenses become a daily compulsion for people who have poor vision. For this very reason LASIK has become quite popular.
The technique is simple and uses laser rays for reshaping the cornea. The laser rays only hit the affected portion as they are precise and accurate. The process is fast and safe. In fact, it is so quick that the entire surgery is over in less than an hour. Therefore you need not wait for endless hours with increased anxiety. The surgeons appointed for performing the surgery are experienced and professional.
However, the surgery needs some prior planning, involving frequent appointments with doctors. The patient is advised by the doctor to discontinue the use of contact lenses before the surgery. Even after the surgery, the patient is advised to wear dark glasses to avoid direct light.
To make the entire procedure painless the patient is immobilised. As the laser rays are passed, they cut out a flap in the cornea, which is then reshaped. Once the cornea is reshaped, it is closed, so that formation of air-bubbles or accumulation of dust can be avoided. A light is hit on the eye to check its response, after which the patient is sent home.
