Laser eye surgery - how did it all begin?

Posted in Laser Eye Surgery on July 2, 2010

Laser eye surgery or laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a process where thin flaps are cut into the cornea and its shape altered. The potential of this technique was recognised before. However, due to the lack of proper technology to test it, this method was not developed. It is only recently that laser technology has gained a lot of popularity and acceptance.

How is the procedure carried out? LASIK is carried out while the patient is awake and mobile. The three stages in this procedure are flap adjustment, laser remodelling and flap repositioning.

Flap adjustment The flap is cut and folded to reveal the stroma of the eye.

Laser remodelling - This step involves the restructuring the shape of the stroma according to the requirements of the patient using a laser.

Flap repositioning The last step in the surgical procedure involves the repositioning of the flap which was initially folded back. Natural adhesion is used until completely healed.

How successful is laser eye surgery? LASIK eye surgery is an almost risk free procedure. It deals with the most delicate part of the eye and alters the shape for light to pass through more easily. Opt for it and get rid of your glasses and lenses.
