Laser eye surgery is a surgical procedure that uses laser beams for reshaping the cornea. This procedure is used for improving long sightedness, short-sightedness or astigmatism. During laser eye surgery, an excimer laser is used. This excimer laser is generally controlled by a computer and is used for removing small amounts of corneal tissues.

During this procedure, a microkeratome is often used to cut the flap of corneal tissue. This tissue is then lifted and an excimer laser is used for reshaping the underlying tissue. Ultimately, the flap is put back to its place.

Prior to starting the laser eye surgery procedure, local anaesthetic eye drops are used. An instrument known as lid speculum is used for holding the eyelid open.
