LASIK eye surgery - Precautions and steps to follow

Posted in LASIK Surgery on June 30, 2010

Your preparation for LASIK eye surgery should start well before your surgery. You should inform your ophthalmologist about your medical history, medications and any medicinal allergies.

Here are some precautions a patient should take before undergoing LASIK eye surgery:

Stop using contact lenses - You must stop using contact lens a few weeks before your surgery. Instead, you can switch to the occasional use of glasses. This is done as a precaution to restore the original shape of your cornea. This will also help to decrease the chance of an eye infection. If you own a pair of hard contact lenses, stop using them at least 6 weeks before your eye surgery.

No creams or lotions on your face - Restrict the use of creams, lotions or cosmetics on your face. These lotions might cause an eye infection. This should be avoided a day before your LASIK surgery.

Eye mapping - Before the operation a computer will use a laser to map and scan your cornea. This information will help the computer to create an accurate map of your cornea. This also helps the computer to determine your eyes exact shape and size. Your surgeon will use this information to accurately determine the depth and size of your corneal tissue. During your eye surgery, some corneal tissue is removed to give your cornea the right shape.

Lastly, remember to rest after the surgery. This will greatly help with your recovery.
