Glasses and contacts lenses can be very annoying. However, lasik eye surgery can increase self confidence after years of hiding behind glasses. Contacts and glasses make many activities difficult like cycling, swimming or diving. Careers like law enforcement and aviation also require excellent vision.
The results of lasik eye surgery are immediate. The surgery takes less than five minutes and is relatively pain free. The patient is awake throughout the procedure. However, a mild sedative may be given beforehand. The results of the procedure can be seen right away certainly within a short space of time.
With the help of a laser, a thin circular flap is created in the cornea. A cool ultraviolet beam is then used to remove the corneal tissue and the flap is folded back and the cornea is reshaped. Vision then becomes clearer as the cornea is better able to focus light onto the retina.
After the surgery, for several days you should avoid rubbing your eyes and steer clear of bright light. You will be given eye drops and antibiotics to heal the eyes more quickly. The chances of infections are very slim. However, some surgeons will prescribe antibiotics as a precaution against occurrence of infections. Eye masks will also prove to be useful at night to protect your eyes from rubbing or scraping.
