Often people complain about their eye problems and are tired of wearing contact lenses and glasses. Introduction of laser eye surgery has solved this problem. Basically, laser eye surgery is a treatment that cures myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism, improves vision and eradicates the use of glasses and contact lenses.

The new procedure of laser eye surgery helps to gain 20/20 vision. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. For correcting the eyesight, LASIK combines two distinct vision techniques:

A knife known as microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea. The cornea is the translucent front part of the eyes which acts as the lens of the eye and controls the light entering the eyes. In short, the cornea protects the eyes. The passage of light through the eyes determines the power of our vision. Refraction errors cause common eye defects like near sightedness.

A computer handled laser is used to vaporise part of the stroma, one of the five layer of the cornea. The stroma is the largest portion of the cornea. It is important to control the refraction of light through the cornea. To flatten the cornea, part of the stroma is vaporised. After this procedure, the cornea flap is replaced back to its original position.

The combination of both techniques allows surgeons to accurately correct the refraction errors of the eye. Laser eye surgery has helped millions of people.
