Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, otherwise known as Lasik surgery, is a popular form of laser eye surgery. Lasik surgery can be used to correct hyperopia (far-sightedness), myopia (near-sightedness) and astigmatism. These problems are caused by irregularities in the shape of the cornea.
The procedure Lasik surgery is relatively quick and simple- although it depends on the condition that you are being treated for. During this process, the surgeon opens a thin flap of the corneal tissue and then reshapes it with a laser. After reshaping it, the surgeon carefully repositions the flap over the treated area. Anesthetic eye drops are used during the procedure, so the patient is able to stay awake throughout the surgery.
After the surgery, the eye tissue heals quickly, although the patient may experience blurred vision for a short period of time. Improvements are usually noticeable after 6 weeks, although it can take up to 6 months.
Is Lasik surgery permanent or temporary?
Although Lasik surgery is considered permanent, eyesight changes naturally as we get older. This means that although the cornea has been reshaped but it may start to change again in the future.
