Aftercare procedures for laser eye surgery
Posted in Laser Eye Surgery on November 5, 2009
Laser eye surgery is an extremely effective procedure that can lessen your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. The procedure itself is generally quite quick, but you need to take proper care of your eyes afterwards, in order to avoid any complications.
Immediately after the surgery, you may feel a burning sensation in your eyes, which might cause some mild discomfort. However, simple painkillers can help to relieve this.
After the surgery you should avoid rubbing your eyes, as this could dislocate the flap and require further surgery to correct. Sensitivity to light is very common after laser eye surgery, although this should start to subside after a few days.
24 to 48 hours after the surgery, you are usually required to visit your surgeon, in order to check on your progress. During this visit, your surgeon will remove your eye shield and test your vision.
After laser eye surgery
It may take several months for your vision to completely stabilise, so you need to ensure that you follow the proper aftercare procedures. You should avoid using products such as moisturizers, lotions and make up around the eye area until your surgeon tells you otherwise.
It is not advisable to participate in sports such as football, rugby, karate and boxing for at least four weeks after the surgery, as you need to protect your eyes from being hit.
If you experience any side effects after laser eye surgery you should see your surgeon or a doctor as soon as possible.
