The basics of Lasik eye surgery
Posted in LASIK Surgery on April 12, 2010
People today are spending more time than usual in front of the computers as their work requires them to do so. However, the more time that is spent in front of the computer, the higher the risk of damaging the eyes. Eye problems are common amongst the working population. Wearing glasses is the ideal solutions for many, but there are some who prefer wearing contact lenses. There is one option that is above both of these though and that is Lasik eye surgery.
Laser-Assisted-Epithelial Keratomileusis or Lasik is a procedure undertaken by those who dont want to wear glasses or contact lenses any longer.
When was the first Lasik eye surgery performed?
The first Lasik surgery was performed at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in USA in 1996, and from then onwards the use of Lasik eye surgery spread across the globe.
How Lasik surgery is performed
The eye surgeons use a device to widen the eyes and drop anaesthetic in. Then the surgeons create a flap in the cornea, in order to reshape it. Many eye problems start with deformities of the cornea. After reshaping the cornea, the flap gets replaced, leaving the patient with better vision.
Lasik eye surgery is popular because right after surgery, patients can go home and get back to their daily routines quickly.
