The Ultralase 3 Peaks Challenge

On Saturday 13 June, a team of Ultralase's finest athletes, including CEO Tony Veverka, will be attempting to climb all three of the UK's highest peaks.

First off, it's Ben Nevis, followed by Scafell Pike late on Saturday evening and finally Mount Snowdon in the early hours of Sunday morning, all in aid of Vision Aid Overseas.

Vision Aid Overseas is a charity dedicated to people in the developing world whose lives are blighted by poor eyesight. 300 million people world wide need spectacles to live an ordinary life, but do not have them due to poverty and the lack of optical services. The World Health Organisation has acknowledged this as the leading cause of avoidable visual impairment. Many people who are functionally blind simply need spectacles to see. Without them, children fail at school, mothers and fathers have to stop working and elderly people are forced to live without dignity. The consequences for individuals and their communities can be devastating.

Team updates

Tony - June 15th

Well, the team have made it back in one piece and we completed the challenge within 23 hours and 45 minutes so although we're a little sore today we're very pleased that we did it within 24 hours. We were all astonished by the sheer pace that was required to get us up and down the mountains in time - there was little time to pause for breath, never mind stop and admire the view! The 61 year old mountain guide who sped us up Snowdon without breaking into a sweat has certainly surprised and inspired us all too...

Perhaps the most deflating part of the challenge was the 3½ hour wait in the cafè at the foot of Snowdon after our minibus broke down. Elated and exhausted after our third and final descent, we were met by the minibus driver who informed us that the minibus had broken down and that there'd be a 'bit of a wait'. We all assumed it was a practical joke at first, however after 3½ hours of nursing cup of tea in the cafè at the foot of Snowdon we were eventually able to bundle into the replacement minibus and begin our journey home.

We're aching everso slightly today, but still keen to take on another event next year, so once the fundraising is over for The 3 Peaks we'll be researching a bigger challenge for 2010. If you were planning to sponsor us it's still not too late - our fundraising is progressing nicely but we still want to smash through our £10K target for Vision Aid Overseas. www.justgiving.com/ultralase3peaks

Tony - June 9th

Just a quick message to update you on the progress of the 3 Peaks team. With only four sleeps to go until the big day, we are counting down to early Saturday morning when we stride off on our first challenge of the day - Ben Nevis.

The challenge is bringing out the competitiveness in all of us - we are raring to go and training hard as all want to be the first to each summit!

The fundraising is going really well; everyone has been very generous and we are almost at the £5,000 mark. We would really like to reach £10,000 as Vision Aid Overseas is such a good cause and will benefit hugely from all donations.

In the last few days before we leave, we are now gathering together all the essential equipment we need so we are prepared for the trip. Don't forget the sun cream!

Remember to visit our justgiving page check out our total so far. And look out here for more team updates in the next few days.

Mike - June 10th

Only days to go and I've got an appointment with the physio tonight! Bad knees and a ropy IT band (don't say a word!) but I'm sure the team will drag me to the top!

Looking forward to it now and the weather may even be kind to us. Just hope it's not too hot. Clear views from the top of 'The Ben' will be spectacular.

Advice on preparation? Try not sleeping for 24 hours, sit in a small wardrobe for 12 of them and climb the stairs 500 times in between!

Michael - June 10th

Really excited about the day now! Have picked up some interesting tips including "cover your feet in Vaseline before putting your boots on"! ...ok

Really proud of the amount of money we've raised so far and am raring to go, roll on Friday!

To all our sponsors - Thank you!
