Company History

The first Ultralase clinic was opened in January 1991 at the Clatterbridge Hospital near Chester. At the time, all treatments performed were Photorefractive Keratotomy, or PRK, until the Lasik procedure was introduced in 1995.

With the introduction of Lasik, and the clear advantages it demonstrated for certain patients, Ultralase went through a period of dramatic growth through 2002. By the end of that year, 12 clinics had been established in metropolitan centres such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and others.

2003 was a year of firsts for Ultralase. In that year, the revolutionary UltraPlus treatment with Wavefront technology was introduced, giving patients visual outcomes far surpassing those of standard laser treatments. Ultra-CK was also launched to treat presbyopia, or the age-related need for reading glasses. Finally, in keeping with a long-lived policy of information transparency, Ultralase became the first and only provider to have all treatment outcomes verified by independent audit.

The success of the new treatment introductions drove another period of clinic growth and between 2004 and 2007, and several new clinics were opened, including locations in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool, and Nottingham.

In 2008, Ultralase became an international network with clinics in Waterford and Cork in the Republic of Ireland. This shortly followed the acquisition of the well known All Clear Clinic in Belfast in the same year.

In November 2008, Ultralase acquired the London Centre for Refractive Surgery (LCRS), the UK’s first clinic totally dedicated to surgically treating refractive problems. The acquisition not only gave customers in the south another convenient location option, but established Ultralase in a prestigious Harley Street location.

In March 2009, the commitment to clinical excellence led Ultralase to become the first UK provider to have all Great Britain surgeons certified in Laser Refractive Surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth). This certification is the only example in the world of its kind and it represented a true badge of honour’ for laser refractive surgeons.

Ultralase is now 31 locations strong, treating short-sight, long-sight, astigmatism, and presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) throughout the UK and Ireland.
